They kinda do. Unfortunately they elected a president who told them “no more wars” and got swindled by the grifter.

    2. I haven’t seen this raptor in a decade, but his fiscal policy is still more coherent than most.

    3. Stuck_in_my_TV on

Probably more wars since authoritarian regimes like Russia and China wouldn’t need such approval and would have carte Blanche to attack whomever they wanted since the democracies would be unable to defend themselves or others.

That’s a thought that sounds simple but gets complicated real fast. Still makes you wonder how different decisions would be.

Tax payers punish responsible spending at the polls, thus why we are in massive debt and spend recklessly.

Or if you vote for a war you must be willing to fight in it yourself. You shouldn’t be able to start a war that others have to fight. If a war is so necessary then those who start it should be willing to fight in it.

    7. ThunderSkunky on

A bunch of dead people would just vote to arrest all of the people still living.

    8. or how quick we’d be overtaken because the populace didn’t make intelligent decisions towards what was needed

    9. Thats what congress is supposed to do, represent the peoples wishes, with out that we pay taxes and dont receive representation, its almost like history has a funny way of repeating this

    10. They sorta do, except they elect the people who are allowed to say yes to wars.

And those people said yes to all those wars.

    11. aleopardstail on

probably even fewer than if those in favour of a war had to, personally, go fight it

    12. Powerful-Currency-46 on

A better thought would be to imagine how few wars there would be if the rich had to both pay for and participate in physically.

So if consent makes it a transaction and not theft, what makes taxes not theft?

    14. Dear Loughheed Martin, for the sum of $10million dollars, your vote is mine. Or can only politicians do that?

    15. GoodPear8481 on

Imagine how little of *literally anything* would get done if every policy decision had to be approved by a direct vote of the people.

    16. Or to declare war the leader has to give up one of their limbs without anesthesia. After all, if they’re going to demand the sacrifice the lives and limbs of their countrymen, it’s only fair that they offer one of their own.

    17. Millennial_Meme_Lord on

Can we just put term limits on everyone and demand that they wear robes and wigs like the British? Maybe they’ll behave if they dress like barristers…

    18. This is thoroughly stupid, this would mean that in order to win a war with a country, you would just need to slip some money to influencer and you’d get an easy win.

Don’t forget, most Americans were against a war with nazi Germany. You could be the worst person in the universe, with a good PR team, you would still get the people on your side

i remember learning how taxes actually worked and having a full mini crisis like wait… my money goes where?? 😭 ever since then i pay way more attention to stuff like this than i used to, it hits different when you realize you’re part of it

    20. We’d have what we have today. An executive office with powers for temporary military campaigns/operations that need no prior approval within a time Period

Y’all sound like I wanted war by paying tax

    22. Haunting_Annual271 on

Probably a few, since we would be under a nazi regime then. Germany would’ve won WW2 if that were the case.

    23. Reaper_Leviathan11 on

while I agree with the sentiment but then again how do you counteract external influences from directly affecting how powerful a country’s defences are? like ignore US for a second, lets say russia wants germany and they made extensive effort to roll out propaganda to reduce the expenditure thus making it far easier for them? just an example use your own country here and a random adversary

just playing the devil’s advocate as I believe all ideas has upside and downs

    24. bangbangracer on

They would actually probably pass very easily since numbers that large are incredibly difficult for people to really quantify. Everyone can understand $1,000. Not everyone truly can understand $1,000,000,000.

    25. Imagine if war needed to be voted on and those that voted for would be automatically enlisted.

    26. abadminecraftplayer on

There was a failed amendment to the Constitution that the decision to go to war would be put to a national vote, and anyone who voted yes had to join the military.

    27. BlackburnXJ9 on

When I think about how many wars in history were actually fought for land and riches, I don’t think that would be so few.

      Edit: Forgot religion

    28. Then the countries that don’t operate that way steamroll the ones that do.

    29. big_johnny_bee on

Right? Right!? And why can’t we have control of where our taxes go again? These mutton-heads are no more capable than anyone else. Long gone is the enshrined instinctual obedience. Wait until people realize that we could have been voting by phone for over a decade. Any system secure enough for Musk and the rest to access the value they developed with their shrewd business acumen is secure enough to vote. If the money is soooooo important…

    30. Imagine how much fewer than that there would be if politicians and their families had to actually fight in them.

    31. BrokenPokerFace on

Yeah but then we get to the point where they should need to approve everything their taxes pay for. Wars, schools, roads, federal support, homeless shelters, relief funds, law enforcement, everything.

Some say it would be a utopia, other say society collapses. The good news is it’s pretty even on both sides who actually supports this. Only really changing whenever something irritates one party or the other.
